Meaningful Use

For 2015 and 2016:

Key facts to know:

  • The Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs reporting period in 2015 is a 90-day period aligned with the calendar year
  • Reporting requirements on measures that have become duplicative, redundant, or topped out have been removed
  • Stage 3 of the program is optional in 2017 and required for all participants starting in 2018

For Stage 2:

  • Eligible professionals (EPs) must report on 10 objectives including 1 public health reporting objective
  • Eligible hospitals and critical access hospitals (CAHs) must report on 9 objectives including 1 public health reporting objective
  • CQM reporting remains as previously finalized

For Stage 3:

  • EPs, eligible hospitals, and CAHs must report on 8 objectives
  • Public health reporting offers flexible options for measure selection
  • CQM reporting is aligned with the CMS quality reporting programs

 

For 2014:

All providers, regardless of their stage, are only required to report on Meaningful Use for a 3-month period. This 3-month reporting period is fixed to the quarter of either the fiscal or calendar year for Medicare providers. To demonstrate meaningful use for Stage 2, Eligible professionals (EPs) must meet the 17 core measures, 3 menu measures (out of the possible 6) for a total of 20 measures.

Clinical Quality Measures (CQMs) are tools that help measure and track the quality of healthcare services provided by EPs. Providers are required to submit CQM data from certified EHR technology to participate in the Medicare EHR Incentive Programs and to receive incentive payment.
